VPS requirements for automated trading
An Expert Advisor works only if the terminal it runs on stays on and connected. This page explains why a VPS is used, what the real requirements are and how to size the plan according to the number of charts.
What a VPS is
A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is a virtual computer in a datacenter, accessible remotely, that stays on continuously. For automated trading it is used with Windows Server, because that is the system the MetaTrader terminals run on. On the server you install the terminal, log in to your account and start the EA: from that moment your home PC is no longer needed.
Why you need it
- Continuous operation. Markets move even when the computer is off. An EA that stops at 11 pm is not the same EA.
- Lower latency. Datacenters have much more stable connections than a home line and can be located close to the broker's servers: less distance means less delay between the decision and the order.
- Stability. No blackouts, Wi-Fi drops or automatic Windows restarts that close the terminal in the middle of a trade.
- Independence from the PC. You can turn off your own computer without interrupting operations.
- Isolated environment. A server dedicated to the purpose, with backup and firewall, reduces the risk that other activities on the same machine interfere with the terminal.

How to size the plan
The parameter that matters is the number of charts open at the same time: every running EA occupies one chart, and across several brokers or several portfolios the charts add up. Softi plans are built on this criterion.

Before activating a VPS
- Count how many EAs you want to run at the same time and on how many accounts.
- Check that the chosen broker allows access from different IPs and, if required, register the server IP.
- Allow a margin of space: historical charts and logs grow over time.
- Configure the automatic restart of the terminal after a server restart.
